Pitts departed this life at the Pitts House, in Covington, at 10 1/2 o'clock, Thursday night, Dec. 8th, 1887. He was born at Newborn, Newton County, Ga., September 8th, 1837, and was united in marriage to Miss Susan Josephine Steed, of Columbia County, Ga., Thursday morning, March 13th, 1863. Dr. Pitts was a graduate of Emory college and also graduated with high honors from one or more medical and surgical institutes. He was a man who had the courage to stand by his opinions and possessed the nerve to perform his duty regardless of any personal consequences. He was kind of heart, generous in disposition and loved his home, his wife and daughters with a devotion which was as strong as death itself. He was a brave and gallant soldier and a useful and industrious citizen. For two years he was Mayor of Covington and he made a faithful and progressive officer. He had his trials and tribulations, his sorrows and misfortune, but he met them like a man without a murmur. As a physician, merchant, hotel keeper, friend and neighbor he was courteous and accommodating. More than a year ago he professed religion and joined the Baptist church. He expressed a willingness to obey his Master's call and died in the full hope and assurance that there was rest and peace for him beyond the grave. The funeral services Saturday were conducted by Rev. J. M. Brittain, who delivered a beautiful, eloquent and impressive sermon, paying a tender tribute to the life and character of the deceased. It could not be expected for us to give a full and correct history of the life of our dead friend, for it would be impossible so to do in a newspaper article at this particular time. He is gone and we shall miss him. Peace be to his memory and sweet rest to his immmortal soul. He leaves a devoted wife and daughter and many friends and relatives to mourn his departure. This was in the same issue of "The Georgia Enterprise" Dec. 15, 1887 TRIBUTE OF RESPECT Doctor THOMAS NOEL PITTS, Covington, Ga., died of Bright's disease, Dec. 8, 1887, Aged 50 years and 3 months. The Doctor has been identified with the interests of Covington for a long period of years, and the community mourns the loss of a useful citizen. In the year 1885, Dr. Pitts sought and found peace with God, presented himself to the Baptist church in Covington, was received and baptized, and as long as he was able, attended the meetings of the church with great delight. Our brother had strong faith, which continued unshaken through out his long illness. For six months previous to his death he was in feeble health and for a long time was a great sufferer; but when the summons came he was ready. He often said his way was clear, and that his Savior was with him. In the full assurance of acceptance he fell asleep in Jesus, leaving for our comfort many tokens of his abiding faith in Christ. Our good brother has preceded us to the "Home of the Blest." Ah, brother, we shall greatly miss your cheering words, but it is yours to be at rest, and ours to toil on. If other hearts have been touched, how is it with the Home Circle! The devoted wife has lost a tender husband, and the affectionate daughter, a kind, loving father. This family is now equally divided. A father and daughter on the other shore, a mother and daughter on this. How mysterious are the rulings of Providence! No man can pierce the water blue, Or scale the wall of Zion's hill. To know indeed God's purpose true, Or learn the Why of His own will. Yet in His Word the lessons lies, Tis ours to trust, tis ours to love; For He knows best His saint who dies, He gently leads to Heaven above. Dear weeping ones, stay your grief. Cherish the joyous reunion in the Sweet Bye and Bye. May He who doeth all things well give you His guiding, comforting presence. Your sympathizing Pastor, J. M. BRITTAIN Covington, Ga.
