O. S. PORTER DIED MONDAY A. M. PIONEER NEWTON COUNTY WOMAN PASSES TO BEYOND, WIDOW OF LATE COTTON MILL OWNER Mrs. O. S. Porter, one of the county’s most beloved women, died at her home here Monday morning, after an extended illness. Though Mrs. Porter’s health had not been good, her death came as a shock to her relatives and friends. She was 88 years old and a native of North Carolina, but came to Newton County when a girl. Mrs. Porter was the widow of the late O. S. Porter, founder, and many years operator to the Porterdale Mills, this property being acquired many years ago by the Bibb Manufacturing company. The town of Porterdale was owned and named for the Porter family. The funeral, one of the largest ever attended in Covington, was held Tuesday morning at the Methodist church, the pastor Rev. J. L. Allgood, assisted by Rev. S. B. Hay of the Covington Presbyterian church and Rev. B. H. Smith, pastor of the Julia A. Porter Methodist church, of Porterdale, the finest church edifice in this section, being named for the deceased. The pall bearers were Messrs. J. L. Elliott, Guy Robinson, L. H. Smith, T. W. Heard, S. Y. Yancey, R. R. Fowler and Dr. W. D. Travis. Mrs. Porter is survived by one daughter, Miss Charlie Camp Porter; three sons, Messrs. John A. and James H. Porter, officials of the Bibb Manufacturing company at Macon and Mr. O. W. Porter, of Covington. She is also survived by six grandchildren and other relatives. As a testimony to the high esteem in which Mrs. Porter was held, the church, Tuesday morning, was covered with flowers, probably the most beautiful array that has ever been gathered there for a funeral before. Interment was in West View Cemetery. File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/newton/obits/p/ob6172porter.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 2.4 Kb
