J. M. ROBERTS IS DEAD Messrs. WILLIAM and WASHINGTON ROBERTS and their father, Mr. J. M. ROBERTS were talking to a Negro man on Tuesday morning last by the name of MARTIN WYATT, who had been paid out of jail by these gentlemen. It is said that the Negro attempted to attack Mr. J. M. ROBERTS with a knife when his son WASHINGTON fired a pistol at the Negro, who dodged behind Mr. ROBERTS. The ball struck Mr. J. M. ROBERTS near the hip and was cut out by Dr. J. C. CLARK, producing a serious and it is feared a fatal wound. The unfortunate accident is deeply regretted, for Mr. ROBERTS is one of the best men in the county, and his sons are young men who endeavor to deal justly toward everybody, especially so with those whom they employed. Tuesday night, Mr. ROBERTS died, and he was willing and ready to meet his Lord. Our town and county mourn the loss of this true and noble man. Time prevents a lengthy tribute to his pure life and spotless character, in this weeks paper. His body will rest in the cemetery here. Aged about 62 years. ********* August 6, 1891 DEATH OF A NOBLE MAN After our paper was ready for the press last week, the sad news came that Mr. J. M. ROBERTS, had died from the wound accidentally received from a pistol in the hands of one of his sons. In the death of Mr. ROBERTS every good man in the county has lost a solid friend, and every righteous cause an earnest advocate. He came from York County, South Carolina, in 1870, and made his home in Oak Hill district, Newton County, Georgia. He lived in that section quite a number of yours and was one of the most industrious and successful farmers in the county. By his gentlemanly and courteous manners he made friends rapidly and retained them to the day of his death. Several years ago he bought a plantation one mile east of town from Mr. Wm. B. LEE, and by toil and labor beautified it so well that the entire place had the appearance of a well kept garden. He was a man who loved home and family and in turn was honored and idolized by every member of his household. He was an Elder in Covington Presbyterian Church and a true and loyal Christian. He served as a member of the city council last year and made a most excellent official. Mr. ROBERTS served through the war in the Confederate army and made a brave and gallant soldier. His record as a citizen and a soldier is without the shadow of blur, stain or blemish. He was an Allianceman who loved the order and who stood by its principals. In fact it can well and truly be said he was one of the best men who ever lived or died in this community. His funeral took place in the Presbyterian Church Wednesday afternoon, the services being conducted by Rev. W. H. MCMEEN, the Pastor, assisted by Rev. Dr. J. N. BRADSHAW. His remains were laid to rest in the family section of the city cemetery, in the presence of a large number of a large number of relatives and friends. He leaves a wife and three sons and two daughters, and many loved ones to mourn his death and lament his loss. Peace to the memory and rest to the soul of our dear departed friend.
