She was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Shepherd and had just reached her seventeenth year. Too much cannot be said of Miss Ethel. She was the life as well as the joy of the family, and her friends were numbered by the score. She graduated from the High School here last summer, with the highest honors of her class, and had the love and respect of both teachers and scholars. Always prompt in the discharge of every duty that was imposed upon her; she was not only the ideal of the family, but had a warm place in the hearts of all who knew her. She was sick but a short while, being taken violently ill on Tuesday night. Physicians were quickly summoned who applied every remedy they could command, all to no purpose. Angels of the heavenly choir had that night listened to her voice in the sickroom and sent for her to come home to them. In four days, that voice which had been so musical to her friends, and who had inspired so many to higher walks in life, was stilled in death. "So fades the summer clouds away, So sinks the gale when storms are o'er; So gently shuts the eye of day, So dies the wave along the shore." Sad, indeed, is it for one so young and beautiful, possessing accomplishments of so high an order, and just entering womanhood. The funeral services were held in the Methodist church last Sunday, being conducted by Rev. S. B. Ledbetter, and assisted by her able instructor, Prof. W. C. Wright. In this sad hour of trouble, we extend our sympathies to the bereaved parents. Same edition as above TRIBUTE OF RESPECT To the Memory of Miss Ethel Shepherd On Monday of last week when I met Ethel on the street and with a happy face she greeted me so cordially, little did I think that it was the last time I should see her in life; but before the week was ended she had left us and gone to live with God. She was with us for only a few short years, but she brought gladness and scattered flowers along her pathway. To me she was more than a pupil, she was my friend. I felt that she was a part of myself and now that she is gone, a part of my own life seems to have gone out with hers. In memory I can see her now as she studies at her desk near the window, or solves her problems on the blackboard in the corner, or reads her Virgil at the upper end of the recitation bench I can hear her voice and see the expression on her face. Again, as she reads her Class Prophecy and later on the Valedictory, I can see her still the same gentle, faithful, loving, Ethel. Had we known last May when she bade us farewell to begin the battle of life in earnest, that ere the leaves had fallen and the trees put forth again she would go so far away, with eager hands and loving hearts would we have bound the leave on tightly to the mother stem and never let them fall. But we did know and now the lovely form has vanished the sweet-voiced bird has flown. She was good, she was pure, she was true, a loving daughter, affectionate sister, devoted friend. We loved her for her noble attributes, and for her own sweet self. We are sad now that she is gone, but the leaves do not fall from the tree of life and beneath its shade she is at rest forever. But though she is with us no longer in the body, though the vase has been broken and shattered, the sweet perfume and the hallowed influence of her life will be with us always. Dear Friend, inspired by your life may we so live, that as the seasons here come and go and the leaves fade and fall, we may one by one, as the silent messenger comes for us, fall asleep in Jesus and join you in your home above, Till then goodbye.
