W. Smith Dead Mr. H. W. Smith, one of the oldest and best known men in Covington died at his home in Midway Sunday night, after a short illness. Mr. Smith was born in Abbeville, S.C. in 1825, where he resided for several years. He was detailed in the Confederate service in 1861, and followed the fortunes of the Confederacy from Sumpter to Appomattox. Soon after the war he moved to Covington where he has since resided. In 1869 he was elected marshal of Covington, which place he filled with credit to himself and satisfaction to the people of the town. He was elected when it was dangerous for any man to be marshal, and after one had just been killed by a desperate character. Two children survive and mourn his death. Mrs. J. M. Holtsclaw and Mrs. Rufus Crews, both of this city. We extend sympathy to the bereaved family in this sad hour of their afflictions.
