LUCY SOCKWELL Died at the home of her husband, Mr. J. W. Sockwell, on the morning of April 4th, in the 41st year of her age, MRS. LUCY SOCKWELL. This excellent lady and consistent Christian woman was the daughter of that venerable man, Mr. James T. Cook, of this county. It is true the voice of eulogy cannot now reach the cold ear of death, or bring back to life the inanimate form so recently laid to rest after solemn and impressive services by her Pastor, Elder Wm. Adams, and which donated more strongly than language could express the depth and sincerity of grief manifested by a large circle of sorrowing relatives and friends. In all ages it has been held to be, not only a duty, but a sad sweet pleasure to recount the virtues and perpetuate the memory of a pure Christian life. Mrs. Sockwell was a faithful, loving and devoted wife, a fond and tender mother, a good and true friend, and kind neighbor. For many months she had been a great sufferer, but during the weary days and long nights of pain she was never heard to complain. Fully conscious of her approaching end she met death with Christian resignation and died as only a Christian can die. Her life was a beautiful illustration of that faith which enables and makes bright the character of all who love their Savior. This devoted Christian woman leaves a husband, one son and two lovely daughters to mourn her loss, while she has gone to meet three infant children on the other shore, which had preceded her to the grave. May heaven bless and God protect the grief stricken husband and children and reunite them in the “sweet bye and bye.” Everything that medical skill and kind friends could do, was done to mitigate her sufferings and stay the relentless hand of death, but her God whom she trusted, and Who was an “anchor to her soul both sure and steadfast,” claimed her as His own. It is a deep and never ending pleasure to those so sorely bereaved that in the midst of pain and suffering there came to her in full abundance those rich and precious promises which this world can neither give nor take away. What sweet, restful peace she now enjoys, safely anchored in her father’s house of many mansions, there she awaits, in God’s own good time, the coming of husband and children whom she loved so fondly in life. So free now from care and pain-from the burdens and responsibilities of human life. Our friend will be sadly missed, her family have sustained an irreparable loss, the church at Harris Spring one of its strongest supporters. Any appeal from suffering humanity ever met a ready response from her in the community. She was a woman of remarkable energy and industry, this coupled with a cheerful, happy disposition, made her life eminently useful, and her home was her palace, where she lovingly and willingly labored for her loved ones. Our God who is too wise to err and too good to be unkind, greatly afflicted her with complicated diseases and as the end drew nigh, she calmly, peacefully and in full possession of all her mental faculties, committed her husband, her children, her all, into the hands of her blessed Lord and Master, and her last prayer invoked His guidance and blessing upon them, when with a sweet expression of countenance, and almost with her last breath said, “all is well, meet me in heaven.” Thus this good woman closed her eyes upon the scenes of earth to open them upon the scenes in heaven. Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep From which none ever wake to weep. A calm and undisturbed repose Unbroken by the last of foes.
