DEATH OF A NOBLE LADY
     Friday evening, March 20th, the sad intelligence reached here that Mrs. 
MARY SPENCER, wife of Mr. William A. Spencer, had died at her husbands home in 
Atlanta. This sad news brought sorrow to the hearts of her many friends and 
dear ones in Covington and Newton County. She was the eldest daughter of Judge 
and Mrs. McCormick Neal, of this city, and one of the best and noblest ladies 
we ever knew. She was born and raised in Covington and shared the first honor 
when she graduated from the female college here some years since. She was 
always a favorite in the school room and in society circles. We learn she had 
been sick only a short while and the news of her death was a shock to this 
entire community. She was an earnest Christian lady and had devoted her life in 
doing good and making others happy. She was prepared to go when the messenger 
of death summoned her home. She was conscious to the moment of her death. Rev. 
Dr. Strickler, her Pastor, delivered a tender tribute to her precious memory at 
the residence, Saturday, after which the body was brought to her parent’s home 
in Covington where it remained until 10 o’clock, Sunday morning, when it was 
laid to rest in the family section in the city cemetery, in the presence of a 
large number of sorrowing friends and relatives. Rev. W. H. McKeen conducted 
the funeral services. Mrs. Spencer was 36 years old. She leaves a husband, four 
children and many loved ones to lament her loss and mourn her departure.
