Georgia Enterprise, March 12, 1895
  Mr. Joseph S. Stewart, School Commissioner of Newton county, died at his
home in Oxford, on Thursday last. He had been in feeble health for a long 
time, but bore his afflictions with patience and resignation. Mr. Stewart
was a  warm hearted, courteous gentleman who will be mourned and missed by
a large number of friends and relatives. For many years he held the responsible
position of County School Commissioner and discharged all of its duties
faithfully, honestly and well. May our old friend sleep sweetly, and may
flowers of beauty bloom upon his grave.
