Mr. Hugh White, one of the best known and most prominent citizens of Newton County, died at the home of his son, Mr. Charles H. White in this city on Thursday morning, after an illness of five or six weeks. Mr. White was the oldest citizen in the county, being at the time of his death ninety-six years of age in the month of last March. For a long number of years Mr. White had lived a useful and exemplary life in Newton County, and up to a few months ago he had resided at his old home place at White’s Shoals in the Southern part of the county. He had lived a very active life and during all the years of his residence among our people he was always found on the right side of questions of public interest, lending his influence to the best interests of the people. Mr. White was born in Ireland, but came to this country at the age of twelve years with his parents, who first located in Charleston, S. C., and later moved to Georgia, locating in the county where he spent the remainder of his life. Having the true instincts of the Irish people he was of that open- hearted disposition in all circumstances, which won for him the lasting friendship of everyone. Mr. White was a remarkable man in many ways. Besides having lived ninety- seven years more than his allotted three score and ten, he was a possessor of a remarkable mind and memory, which he retained up to within a short time before his death. He was an interesting talker, and a most courteous and affable gentleman. He was a true scholar of the ____ school, so fast disappearing in the south. Four children survive Mr. White; Mr. Charles H. White of this city, Mrs. Alice Aiken of this city, and Mrs. Althea Wright and Mrs. Ada Aiken of Stewart. Besides his children, Mr. White leaves a number of relatives and a large circle of friends to mourn his death. The funeral occurred Friday morning at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. White. Rev. Mr. Ellenwood of Atlanta conducting the services, after which the interment took place at Red Oak, in the southern part of the county.
