Bio of Robert Willoughby, son of William, - Clarke, Oconee Cos. GA Submitted by: jim willoughby Robert WILLOUGHBY and Elizabeth MEADOWS and their Descendants The Willoughby line in our family continues from William Willoughby through his son Robert, who was born in 1799. Robert was most likely born in Green County Georgia. In December of 1820, he married Elizabeth Meadows. Their marriage took place in Clark County Georgia. In the 1830 Census of Clark County Robert is shown as having three males and three females in the household. The youngest is a boy and a girl, each under five years of age. The oldest is Robert, 1 male 35-40. Early Census Records list only the head of each household.Beginning in 1850, each household member is recorded by name, making it much easier to document family records. Robert and Elizabeth had the following children: Nancy Sarah Seaborn James Elizabeth Robert Willoughby died on August 13, 1834, at the age of 34, in Clark County Georgia. He left a widow and five children. Faced with the hardships and uncertainty of the times, the family became divided. Guardianship papers document that Seaborn and Lizzy Willoughby, orphans of Robert Willoughby, became the wards of William Meadows of Coweta County Georgia.Coweta County Theophilus Meadows, most likely the son or grandson of of William Meadows, became the guardian of James, Sarah, and Nancy, the other three orphans of Robert and Elizabeth. Coweta County Returns Books show William is reimbursed for his expenses by David Willoughby, the administrator of the Estate of his Brother Robert, in the amount of $364. 89. The return is dated the 3rd day of January, 1838. Another, dated July 25, 1840, documents the the amount due and paid Theophilus; $522.83. The Estate Returns also show that John T Williams received $151.00 in right of his wife. His wife was the oldest of Roberts and Elizabeths children, Elizabeth Willoughby. Clark County, Georgia Marriage Records show that She and John T Williams were married in Clark County. Georgia on 15 April, 1834, just four months before the death of her father, Robert. William Meadows is most likely the father or grandfather of Elizabeth Meadows. The first documentation of William is in the 1810 Clark County Tax List. He is listed in Captain Martindales District (Rose Creek and Oconee River Are) This is the exact same district that William Willoughby and his family lived in 1810. Clark County Poor School Records of 1823 lists William Meadows children: Reuben, Theophilus and Anna. An advertisement in an Athens Newspaper, dated, 1828, lists a Col. Samuel T. Bailey and William Meadows. It is possible that this is the same William Meadows as above. THE ATHENIAN, VOL 11, No 24,, an Athens, Georgia Newspaper dated Tuesday, June 17, 1828, their appears an announcement of a celebration of American Independence. The ensuing 4th of July will he celebrated on the Summit of the Stone Mountain in DeKalb Co. where the Declaration of Independence will he read by Maj. Hines Holt; Washington' s Farewell Address by Col. William Ezzard and an Original Poem suitahle to the occasion delivered by Col.Samuel T. Bailey. A dinner will he prepared for the occasion by Mr. William Meadows, residing at the foot at the mountain. ... Decatur 7th June. Theophilus first married Martha Christine McLin, daughter of David McLin, 8 Apr 1831 in Coweta County Georgia. They had the following known children : i. James Bailey MEADOWS ii. David Alexander MEADOWS iii. Fanny F. MEADOWS iv. William Thomas MEADOWS Theophilus and his family moved from Georgia to Alabama and then to Texas. Upon the Death of Martha, Theophilus remarried. The name of his second wife is not known. According to Meadows desendendants living in Texas, Theophilus is buried in Clifton Cemetery in Raines County Texas, near the Hopkins County line in an unmarked grave. Buried in this cemetery with him are his son, David Alexander Meadows, and grandson, James Walter Meadows, son of William Thomas Meadows. William MEADOWS was married to Elizabeth BAILEY, possibly the daughter of Col. Samuel Bailey mentioned in the Athens News Article above. Upon the death of William in 1838, Theophilus was named Administrator of his estate on Nov. 19, 1838. Elizabeth died in 1855. At the Estate Sale of William Meadows, on January 8, 1839, the first item sold was 21 barrels or corn @$3.56 for a total of $66. 25. This purchase was made by Levi Newton. Additional items were bought by by the Widow Meadows, JJ Bird, Thomas Johnson, Ox Phillips, E A Smith, William MEADOWS, William CHAPMAN, and James WILLOUGHBY. James WILLOUGHBY, who was 14 years old at the time, (grandson of William, son of Robert) purchased a jug at the price of 6 cents. William CHAPMAN was the father of Sarah CHAPMAN.
