A native of Clarke County, he was the son of James (Jim) Smith, Athens, and Frankie Bellew Messer, Winterville. He was the owner of Sonny’s Carpets in Athens and was a member of Liberty Baptist Church, Madison County. Mr. Smith fell in love and married Karen Dorsey, making their home in Oconee County, according to family members. Survivors, in addition to his wife and parents, include two sons, Sonny Smith, Watkinsville, and James Smith, Crawford; three sisters, Pam Weisman, Thompson, Tammy Smith Allen, Athens, and Laurie Smith, Winterville; a brother, Jeff Smith, Hull; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 9, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Northcutt officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Michael Allen, Oscar Parada, Craig Guntharp, James Evans, Benny Burgess and Jeff Smith. The family will receive friends Wednesday, December 8, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Bernstein Funeral Home, Athens, is in charge of arrangements.
