New York: American Bible Society, Instituted in the year MDCCCXVI. 1847.” Written on the inside cover – “Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.” Top of first blank page of the book, overwriting in blue-green ink – “Henry David,s Book –“ Below on same page in very faded ink or pencil. “Mary C Vaughan’s Book” “Book a gift by ___ David” “Written by Alexander Vaughan her father March 21# 1850” “Mary C Vaughan was born January 18# 1830” Above inscription overwritten by “Lydie.” Lydie Bryant was my great aunt. She probably wrote her name in the Bible when she was a child. On the title page is written “Mary C. Hewell.” Additional Comments: This Bible was given to me by Fred Gilbert Bryant, my grandfather, when I was twenty-five years old. Fred kept it in his wardrobe wrapped in tissue. The Bible originally belonged to Mary Caroline Vaughan Hewell, his grandmother. The Bible is personal size, seven inches by four and a half inches in brown leather bonded to cardboard. The Bible is in very good condition, but the original inscriptions are extremely faded.
