According to his tombstone in Butts County, Georgia, he was born in Walker County, North Carolina in 1767. There is no Walker County, North Carolina, it was most probably Johnston County, later Wake County, North Carolina, and the year of birth is believed to be early by two years. He is listed as age 80 on the 1850 census of Butts County, which would make him born in 1770. Matthew Barber married Mrs. Johannah Johnson, a widow, on 24 February 1803 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia.[3]14 Matthew and Johannah had moved to Butts County by 1826, where they lived out their lives. Matthew died 11 May 1859, and his wife Johannah died 15 September 1866. Matthew Barber served in the Georgia Militia Dragoons from 1 November 1794 to 31 December 1794.[4]15 Matthew and Johannah had two sons born to them, George W. Barber born 8 December 1803 and Josiah W. Barber, born 1808. 1. George W. Barber, born 8 December 1803, Ogelthorpe County, Georgia, married Louisa W. Lovejoy 29 January 1827 in Butts County, GA.[5]16 George died 18 July 1883, Butts County. Louisa Was born 21 April 1809, died 1 October 1879. The town of Lovejoy, Georgia was named for her father. A. Tex Infantry. On Oct. 10th 1862 he was detailed to cook for the sick at the hospital in Desarc, Arkansas. On Nov 22, 1862 he was sick at Camp Nelson. Barber, the eldest son of Matthew and Joannah Barber, served as Justice of the Inferior Court in 1834 for Butts County, Georgia. When the Congregational Methodist Church Asembly was formed in Butts County, he was one of the first representatives.[26]31 Excerpts from [27]History of Butts County, GA I am beginning to think that the name Mathew S. Barber in the will of George W. Barber, should actually be Madison S. Barber. It was very hard to read. If somebody has access to the microfilm for Butts County, or has access to the courthouse, perhaps they could get a fresh reading and let me know. Will of George W. It is my desire that my body shall be buried in a decent and Christian like manner. My soul I trust will return to rest with God who gave it. 2.
