No. 1353 WIDOWS' PENSION ------Paid To---- Mrs. Nancy Jane Tiller ----of--- Oglethorpe County $100.00. Warrant Issued 1891 And Handed To Geo. W. Harrison, State Printer, Atlanta Each year until 1907 Nancy and all the other Widows of Georgia had to fill out these forms in order to receive their pensions. After 1907 any widows who had already applied no longer were required to fill out these forms each year. However, in 1907 the person filling out the form put down Samuel Tiller as her husband. Not being able to read or write she would not have known it wasn't correct. This misspelled name may have prompted the following exchange in 1915. Nov. 24, 1915. Respectfully returned to the Commissioner of Pensions, State of Georgia, Atlanta. The records show that S. Tiller (name also borne as Shimer and Shim- mie Tiller), private, Capt. John Til- ler's Company, Georgia (Echol's Light Artillery), C. S. A., enlisted May 3, 1862, and that he died of pneumonia April 19, 1863.
