Bro. C. was baptized by the venerable Jack Lumpkin and united with the Antioch church, Oglethorpe County, where his membership remained to the time of his death. His quiet demeanor, punctuality and faithfulness in the discharge of duty, genial temper and consistency of Christian conduct secured him the affection of his brethren and the confidence of his acquaintances. He was one of those rare characters whom, though marked with strong individuality, men felt no disposition to disparage. When the time came for those of his age and position to take their places in the ranks of the country's defenders, he unhesitatingly obeyed the call. In vain did friends urge that he should plead physical disability of long standing, and appeal to a Medical Board for exemption. His country had called for him and he was prepared to do what he could, leaving he event with God. It pleased the Lord that his term of service should not be of long duration, and that he should die thus away from wife and children; but His divine presence sustained him, and His rod and His staff they comforted him. Thus has fallen another victim of this atrocious war. P.H.M. (Rev. P.H. Mell, pastor).
