Matthews, of Oglethorpe county, last Friday evening. Mr. Matthews was out near a field close by his house, and was directing a squad of Negroes in the work of cutting down several large trees. One of the trees that had been cut had fallen against another tree upon which the men were cutting. Mr. Matthews, who was watching the work, noticed the tree move and saw that the workmen were in great danger. He started towards them to warn them of their danger but misjudged the direction in which the tree was falling. The tree fell with a crash and striking Mr. Matthews pinned him to the earth.
