He had been in declining health for two years and was seriously ill for three days. Mr. Smith was a retired mechanic and carpenter and was born in the Fortsonia Community in Elbert County but had lived most of his life in Oglethorpe. Funeral services were held at the Palmetto Christian Church on June 9, with the Rev. E.A. Miller officiating. Interment was in the Caldwell family cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Blondine Caldwell Smith of the home, his mother, Mrs. Cynthia Louise Gunter Smith of Fitzgerald; two sons, Lanie Smith, Dothan, Ala., and Charles Smith of Carlton; five brothers, Hoyt Smith, East Point, E.C. Smith, Atlanta, J.B., Looney and Lamar Smith all of Fitzgerald; seven sisters, Miss Mottie Smith, Mrs. Lawrence Burt, Mrs. Lois Parson, Mrs. Ruby Strickland, Mrs. Vidalia Owens, and Mrs. Irene Hughes, all of Fitzgerald and Mrs. John Robinson, Jacksonville, Fla. and one grandchild.
