Miss Mattie, You will perhaps be surprised at receiving a letter from me; but 
as I have written it with the most honourable motives I trust I may expect your 
pardon should the contents not be perfitly congenial to your views.  I have 
flattered myself that I am not disagreeable to you and I might expect a mutual 
degree of attachment from you.
  Dare then may I venture to make you an offer of my hand.  My heart you have 
long possessed  to this I can only add which my happiness depends altogether on 
the reply you make to this offer;  on the contary should you reject this offer 
I should be rendered the most miserable of beings.
 Anxious to receive an answer, which may allay the unsettle feelings which at 
present agitates a heart wholly yours.

     I received yours in the care of Mr. Thomas Huff which surprised me very 
much, but congenial to my views.  It is not congenial to my wishes to give you 
a written answer; if you will honor me with a visit, I will give you a verbal 
answer.
