IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN. I, Matthew Varner Sr., of the County and State aforesaid, being of sound mind and disposing memory, do constitute and ordain this my land Will and Testament in the words following-to-wit: Item 1: I give to my two sons William Varner and Matthew Varner, and my daughter Elizabeth Christopher and the lawful heirs of my son, John Varner, five Negroes named Crawford a man, Robert a man, Jim a boy, Henry a boy, and Grover a boy, and also any money that I may have on hand to be equally divided between them at my death. Item 2: I give to my two sons William Varner and Matthew Varner, one thousand dollars in gold, which they are to apply as agents for the use and benefit of my daughter Mahalia Sorrells, to be faithfully applied, provided she applies for it herself, but if she should not apply for it, then they are to give it to the heirs of her body. Item 3: It is my desire that my household stuff, horses, oxen, wagon, barouch, should belong whichever one of my children I may be living with at the time of my death. Item 4: I appoint my son in law James Ellis and my son Matthew Varner to execute this my last Will and Testament. Personally appeared in open Court Andrew Campbell and Bradley Perry subscribing witnesses to the within Will, and after being duly sworn deposeth and saith, that they saw Matthew Varner Sr. sign, seal, publish, and declare this writing to be his last Will and Testament, that at the time thereof he was of sound disposing mind and memory, and that he did it freely without compulsion and that they also signed the same as witnesses to the best of your knowledge.
