Reese of Paulding County, Georgia Soldiers Invalid Pension 1898 Name: J.B. Reese County: Paulding Disability: Body Wound Amount $50. For Use of Applicants Who Have Not Heretofore Drawn State of Georgia, Paulding County Personally appears, J.B. Reese of said Paulding County, State of Georgia, who being duly sworn on oath, says that he was born on the 1st day of Feb'y 1833, that he is a bona fide citizen and resident of Georgia and has been continuously so since the 1st day of Feb'y 1833; that he enlisted in the military service of the Confederate States on the 1st day of March 1861 during the war between the states and served in Company D of the 8th Regiment of GA Volunteers, Anderson's Brigade and was honorably discharged on the 1st day of April 1865. That whilst engaged in such military service and in the line of duty in the State of VA on the 28th day of June 1862 he was disabled or wounded as follows: By gunshot wound in right shoulder, minnie ball brakeing blade bone. Said wound is permanent and renders said arm substantially and essentially useless. I cannot carry any weight on said right shoulder, it is stiff and grately impairs the use in the ordinary avocations of a farmer. WOuld say that I cannot do more than one fourth the labor of an ordinary farm hand on account of said wound. Deponent desires to participate in the benefits of the Act approved October 24th 1887 and the Acts amendatory thereof and makes application for the pension to which he is entitled for the year thereunder, ending October 24th 1898. Hudson, Ordinary Affidavit for Three Witnesses State of Georgia, Carroll County Personally appeared before the undersigned Justice of the Peace in and for said County, E.J. Kilgore, personally known to me to be trustworthy citizen, who being duly sworn according to law, says under oath that he is personally well acquainted with J.B. Reese whose application is herewith presented for a pension; that he has resided in this State continuously since the 1st day of ?? 1833; that he served in Company D of the 8th Regiment of Anderson's Brigade and from my personal knowledge he was injured in the service as follows: I saw him when he came home from the war, body shot in the shoulder and from my knowledge of his wound I do not think he was able to perform manuel labor. I do not know of my own knowledge whether he does any work or not or whether he labors or not. It was some time in the year 1862 when he came from to Meriwether Co. GA from the War. I was not with him in the Army but have known him since that date. E.J. Kilgore Sworn to and subcribed before this this 20th day of Jan'y 1898. J.W. Cobb, N.P., ex officio J.P. Physician's Affidavit State of Georgia, Haralson County Personally comes before the undersigned Ordinary of said County, W.F. Goldin and B.F. Eaves, both known as reputable physicians of said County who being severally sworn say on oath that they have carefully examined J.B. Reese and after such personal examination say that the present condition of the applicant is as follows: He was wounded in the right shoulder, the ball entering the upper portion of the ?? and there is an abcess that continues to be discharging at the mouth from the lungs, it discharges ?? and blood. The ball seared the large tissues of the shoulder and muscles and ? away, leaving the arm and hand almost useless and the ?? at all times arising from the abcess in the wound renders him unable to perform manual labor. We have treated applicant professionally (dr. Gones) 5 years and his condition as above stated does not arise from hereditary or congenital causes or from vicious or intemperate habits. W.F. J.B. Reese Affidavit for Three Witnesses State of Georgia, Meriwether County Personally appeared before the undersigned Ordinary in and for said County, S.F. Culpepper, R.D. Adams, J.E. Adams, personally known to be trustworthy citizens, each of whom being duly sworn according to law, severally say under oath that they are personally well acquainted with J.B. Reese whose application is herewith presented for pension; that he has resided in this state continuously since the 1st day of February 1833; that he served in Company D of the 8th GA Regiment of Anderson's Brigade, and from our personal knowledge he was injured by the service as follows: Gunshot wound through right shoulder int he Battle of Garnett's Farm in Virginia, which renders said shoulder entirely useless to perform manual labor. In fact it renders said shoulder and arm substantially and essentially useless. We personally know the above facts. We were with him in the Army and have known him ever since. He was honorably discharged in May 1865. Applicant is permanently disabled as stated and has been so to our certain knowledge ever since 1862. S.F. Culpepper, R.D. Adams, J.E. Adams. Reese made applications for pension in 1899, 1900. 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904 and 1905 in Paulding County, Georgia. In 1904 he notes that his post office address is Villa Rica, Georgia and in 1905 his post office address is Draketown, Georgia. ********************* Widow's Application for Pension Name: Sarah A. Reese, widow of Josiah B. Reese, of Paulding County, Georgia Widow's Affidavit State of Georgia, Paulding County Personally came Mrs. Sarah Ann E. Reese, widow of Josiah B. Reese, to whom, in the County of Meriwether, State of Georgia, she was married on the 4th day of December 1856; that she remained his wife up to the 7th day of June 1905 at which time he died and that she has not since married. At the time of his death he was a resident of Paulding County in said State of Georgia and was on the Invalid Pension Roll of the State of Georgia, having been allowed a pension of $50. per annum on account of being a soldier in Company D of the 8th Regiment of GA Volunteers. Which affliction have you and how does it affect you? I am worn out with age, am 70 years old and too feeble to do anything. What have you been doing to earn a support since 1st January 1900? Nothing What property or effects had you on 1st January 1900? Nothing What you you acquired since and what income do you have now? None What disposition have you made of any property since January 1st 1900 and at what price and for what purpose? None Deponent further says that she is now a resident of Paulding County and has continuously resided int he State of Georgia since the 1 day of Feb'y 1836. Newman, known to be reputable and truthful persons who say on oath that from their own personal knowledge Mrs. Sarah Ann E. Reese who made the foregoing affidavit is the widow of Josiah B. Reese who died in Paulding County, and State of GA on the 7 day of June 1905 and that she has not since married; that they lived together as man and wife until he died.; and that she has continuously resided in this State since the 6 day of Jan 1890 ?. With what affliction does she suffer? From old age, worn out. What property or income had she on 1st January 1900? None How was she supported in 1900 and 1901? By her husband. J.E. (or C?)
