He was born in Carroll County, Georgia February 6, 1938 the son of the late Herman Preston Akin and the late Alice Morris Akin. He moved from Atlanta to the Temple area about 18 years ago and was retired from Yellow Freight Trucking Company where he worked for many years as a truck driver. He was a member of the Samuel S. Lawrence Masonic Lodge No. 721 F&AM, the Sweetwater Shrine Club, Douglasville and was Baptist by faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Frances McDevitt and Sarah Appling. Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Jan Akin of Temple; his step-mother, Carrie Mae Akin of Powder Springs; his children, Ricky Akin of Jonesboro, Chris Akin of Temple, Donna Jenkins of Temple, Danny Akin of Ellenwood, Charles (Buddy) Akin of Stockbridge and Savannah Akin of Temple; five sisters, Martha Young of Texas, Robbie Appling of Thompson, Georgia, Barbara Wade and Elaine Ramey, both of Powder Springs and Gail McCoy of Waleska; three brothers, Larry Akin of Dallas, Steve Akin of Powder Springs and Frank Akin of Calhoun; 10 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Friday, June 11, 2004 at 1 p.m. from the chapel of J. Hoyt Thomas Funeral Home with Pastor Ken Magness officiating. Interment followed in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Graveside Masonic rites were conducted by the Samuel S. Lawrence Masonic Lodge No., 721 F&AM and the Flag Ceremony and presentation was conducted by the Honor Guard Team of the American Legion Post 143, Carrollton. Jonathan Chavis, Kenny Jenkins, Ricky Akin, Chris Akin, Danny Akin, Charles Akin, Jacob Chavis and Aaron Akin served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Andy Akin and Wesley Akin.
