He stated to a reporter the facts of a strange occurrence. Mr. W.C. Mathews and several workmen were digging a grave in the burial yard of New Hope church. One of the men’s spades struck some bones at a depth of about a foot an a half. In a few minutes three skeletons were exhumed. It was agreed that the bones are those of confederate soldiers who were killed in the yard of New Hope church, where a battery was stationed. A battle was fought here in July 1864 and many soldiers bit the dust. The bones were given burial in another place.
