Mrs. Melba “Dea” Mathis Johnson Passes

Mrs. Melba “Dea” Mathis Johnson , age 85, of Dallas, Georgia, passed away 
March 24, 2005 at her residence.

“Dea”, as she was affectionately called by all who loved her, was born January 
31, 1920 in Petal, Mississippi, daughter of the late William Chester Mathis 
and the late Eleanor Cochran Mathis. She was a faithful member of the First 
Baptist Church of Dallas and retired from the Paulding County School System as 
a Special Education Teacher.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Kay Belcher and Mr. and Mrs. Jerry (Lyn) 
Shelton, both of Dallas; two sons, Mr. George Johnson, III and Mr. William C. 
Sonny Johnson, both of Dallas; two sisters, Juanita Berry of Hattiesburg, 
Mississippi and Mrs. Minnie Lee Stone of Laurel, Mississippi; four 
grandchildren, Pam Call, Audrey Kendall, Beth Redmond and James Shelton; four 
great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Charlie and Annette Marsh of Gainesville 
and Mrs. Doris Johnson of Milledgeville and brother-in-law, Mr. Charles 
Johnson of Gainesville.

In addition to her parents, William and Eleanor Cochran, she was preceded in 
death by her husband of 39 years, George G. Johnson, to who she married on 
September 1, 1944.

Funeral Services were conducted on Saturday, March 26, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. from 
Benson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Alton Wilson and Rev. Greg Potts 
officiating. Special music was rendered by the Joyful Singers under the 
direction of Mrs. JoAnn Lawrence.

Interment followed in Paulding Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Thomas 
Aiken, Clyde Childers, Don Scoggins, Alan Clay, Ken Rakestraw, and Steve 
Turner.

Benson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
