Born in Canton, Georgia, he was the son of the late Franklin M. and Alice Mitchell McFarland. He was a helicopter inspector and a member of Youth Baptist Church. He graduated from Massanutten Military Academy in Woodstock, Virginia. He had 39 years of military service which included active duty in the Air Force, Air National Guard and Army Reserve. He served in the Korean Conflict and during the Vietnam War. He was a flight engineer in the 116th Fighter Interceptor Group. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth Sara Cole McFarland of Powder Springs; his daughters, Karen Beth Speer of Lawrenceville and Terry Blakely of Acworth; his sons, Bruce McFarland of Duluth and Mike McCluskey of Valrico, Florida; his brothers, Gus McFarland of Marietta, Ed McFarland of Douglasville and Frank McFarland of Vero Beach, Florida; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Bellamy Funeral Home with Brother Moses Florence officiating. Interment followed with full military honors in the Powder Springs Memorial Gardens. Bellamy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
