Soon after this vast territory was aquired by the State, settlers began taking up land by entry and the first of these pioneers to take up homesteads was the family of William Allgood and his wife Mary Hudson Allgood, and their three sons John Young, Patrick Henry, and William Allgood, Jr. This session comprised what is now Harelson, Paulding. and Polk counties and all land north to the Tennessee and Alabama Line. Those were rugged days and it required strong hearts, and strong brawney muscles to win against handicaps that confronted them on every side. They took time out from hard work to establish the historic Allgood Methodist Church on land given by William Allgood. The church was built on the north-west corner of what is now Paulding county, Georgia. The settlers felt the need of stronger support than they, within themselves could create, and on Sunday they went to church. People for miles around were attracted to the church and it prospered. Soon it was necessary to build a larger church to accomodate the attendance. The second Allgood Methodist Church was destroyed, the present building is the third building of the church and is located on the original site. The church was active from 1832 until 1939, one hundred and seven years. Each year, on the fourth Sunday in August, the Allgood Methodist Church has homecomung services. Members, past members, friends and relatives meet at the historic church to pay tribute to the memory of their loved ones, many founders of the church, who have worshipped here and are buried in the cemetary adjacent to the church.
