Valley Minister Killed in Auto Collision With Train Fort Valley, Ga., June 2 – Dr. H.B. Dean, aged 72, rector of the Episcopal Church here, was instantly killed and Mrs. T.C. Eberhardt, a parishioner of nearly the same age was painfully injured at 5:30 o’clock this afternoon when the automobile in which they were riding was demolished at the College Street crossing of the Southern Railway by a freight engine. The body of Dr. Dean was cut into (in two?) just below the chest and both arms were severed near the elbows. Mrs. Eberhardt was caught on the cowcatcher and saved from serious injury, although she is in a precarious condition as the result of the shock and weakened condition from previous ill health. She has not been advised of the death of Dr. Dean. Dr. Dean and Mrs. Eberhardt who is the wife of a local machinist were returning to the latter’s home after a visit with one of the lady’s relatives. Several small houses belonging to the oil (?) mill obscures a clear view of the tracks at the crossing. The machine was struck squarely just as it mounted the slight grade and settled in the crossing. The engine was going at a speed of about fifteen miles an hour, and the engineer, R.P. Hopkins, was powerless to prevent the accident. The automobile was completed demolished. Dean was dragged for about twenty- five feet before he fell under the wheels of the locomotive. A crowd quickly recovered Mrs. Eberhardt to her home. She was told that Dr. Dean had been badly hurt, but nothing more. She was in a semi-conscious condition when picked up.
