The Carroll County Times, Carrollton, GA February 23, 1877
One Woman Stabs another Woman to death.  We learn of a most horrible affair 
that occurred in Pickens county last Saturday night, the 10th inst.,  It 
seemed a party had been given at the house of Mr. Hambrick, at which quite a 
number of both sexes had assembled.  Among the number was Mrs. Southern the 
married daughter of Mr. Hambrick, and also Mrs. Cowart, formerly a Fowler, who 
was divorced from Cowart.  The dancing had been kept up to a late hour, when 
it is said Mrs. Southern went to her father, Mr. Hambrick, and asked him for 
his knife.  In reply as to what she wanted with it, she said she wanted to cut 
a toothbrush.  The knife was given her and shortly afterward she became 
involved in angry controversy with Mrs. Cowart, who was at that time on the 
floor with the dancers.  One word led to another when blows were exchanged.  
Mrs. Cowart was knocked down and just as two other women were lifting her up, 
Mrs. Southern stabbed her in the throat and breast several times, Mrs. Cowart 
falling to the floor a ghastly corpse, besmeared in the crimson tide of her 
own life's blood, while the spectators looked on paralyzed with horror.  
Finally a gentleman requested that no one leave the house until the guilty 
were arrested, when it is said the husband of the murderess drew his pistol 
and refused to have any motion put on its passage, and the house was cleared.
At last accounts Sheriff Lindsey of Pickens had a warrant for the arrest of 
four persons, including Mrs. Southern, her husband and father, and was enroute 
to make the arrests.  Jealousy is said to be the cause of the sad affair.
