Mr. John W. Freeman died at his home in Talking Rock about 6 o'clock Monday afternoon after a long ill- ness. Mr. Freeman was for years one of the county's leading business men and was very successful in commer- cial affairs until he retired from ac- tive business a few years ago. Mr. Freeman in his early life knew all the hardships of the fron- tier. He took full advantage of such meager educational oppourtunities as came his way and thruout his life kept well informed on the public questions of the day. He was a mere lad when the Civil War broke out, yet he was among those who heard the call of the South and bore arms for Dixie on many a bloody field. He was only nineteen when the great struggle ended. While war had destroyed the hopes of his boy- hood, it could not destory his de- termination to make a success of his life. He never sought public honors himself, but took an interest in pub- lic affairs and for years wielded the strongest political influence of any one man in the Northern part of the county. Over sixty years ago he united with the Baptist church and ever afterwards remained one of its staunchest supporters. He is survived by one son, Mr. Will Freeman of Talking Rock, and two daughters, Mrs. W, C. McClain, of Jasper and Mrs. A. A. Warlick, of Etowah, Tenn. and a number of Grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at Anitoch Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon at 10 o'clock by Rev. H. G. Cordell and Rev. Henry Thom- nson. -Cagle Bros. funeral directors in charge.
