Johnson Dies after Long Illness - Mr. Joe Matt Johnson, 80, whose health had been growing steadily worse for years, died Sunday morning. Mr. Johnson had spent his life in the vicinity of Jasper. We had been personal friends for fifty-one years and during all that time we never knew him to do anything that was not honorable and above board. He was a member of the Baptist church. Funeral services were held monday, July 7, from Philadelphia Baptist church with Rev. Dewey Tucker, Rev. S.L. Padgett and Rev. Clay Westbrook officiating. Pickens Star Lodge No. 220 F & A. M. had charge of graveside services. The Chapman Funeral Home had charge of arrangments. He is surved by four sons, Mr. Carl Johnson, Mr. Hardy Johnson, Mr. Cecil Johnson and Mr. Marion Johnson; four daughter, Mrs. Elgin Stell, Mrs. Vernon Kincaid, Mrs. Jack Hamrick and Mrs. Houston Padgett all of near Jasper, one brother, Mr. Charlie Johnson, Griffin; two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Hughes, Kennesaw, and Mrs. J.J. Stipp, Jasper, 29 grandchildren and 7 great- grandchildren. Additional Comments: Josiah Matt Johnson was my husband's great-grandfather.
