George W. Bennett, Jr., age 25, will be held Thursday, August 12, at 10 a.m. at Ben James Church, northwest of Blackshear seven miles. Rev. Huey Dixon of Waycross will officiate. Sgt. Bennett was born in Pierce County, October 10, 1919, raised on the farm and before enlisting in the U.S. Army was an employee of the Service Ice Co., of Waycross for a number of years. He enlisted in the army September 2, 1942, was a member of Co. A of the 19th Bn. and the 14th Armored Division. Was killed in action against the enemy on April 3, 1945, while fighting between Saskenback and Nantenbach. Having been interred in the U.S. military cemetery at Bensheim, Germany, his body was shipped to this country July 2, 1948, and arrived in Blackshear Tuesday, August 10, 1948 under escort. Upon arrival he was carried to the Darling Funeral Home, Blackshear, where he will remain until funeral services. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery. Honorary and active pallbearers will be the Pierce County Post No. 181 American Legion, J. Leon Roberts, Jr., commander. Graveside military honors will be furnished by Co. G. 121st Inf., Georgia National Guard, Lt. H.M. Davis, commanding, of Waycross. This will be a firing squad and bugler after which the military escort will present the flag to the widow of Sgt. Bennett. Surviving Sgt. Bennett are his widow, Mrs. Eloise Ammoms Bennett; two sons, Robert and Carl Bennett of Blackshear; three sisters, Mrs. Dave Hyman of Waycross, Mrs. Vernon C. Westberry of Patterson, and Miss Maudie Mae Bennett of Blackshear, and three brothers, Archie and Ernest Bennett of Blackshear and Melvin Bennett of Waycross.
