Peacock, 71, Former Blackshear Police Chief, Dies Lemuel Wiley Peacock, 71, native and prominent citizen of Blackshear, died in Jacksonville Thursday afternoon, May 1, following a long illness. Mr. Peacock was well known in this section, having been for many years a landowner and planter in Pierce County. He served at one time as chief of police for the city of Blackshear and for 12 years deputy sheriff of Pierce County. Survivors include his wife Mrs. Kate Johns Peacock, three daughters, Mrs. J.F. Walker, Mrs. W.J. Moody, Mrs. Robert W. Head, all of Jacksonville, two sons, Chester H. Peacock of Jacksonville and Lonnie R. Peacock of Blackshear, two sisters, Mrs. Ernie Tuten and Mrs. Daisy Burell of Blackshear, and eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday morning from the Rehobeth Missionary Baptist Church in Pierce County, where Mr. Peacock was a member. The pastor, J.H. Thompson, officiated. Burial was in Rehobeth cemetery. Active pallbearers were H.M. Carter, J.R. Walker Jr., L.J. Cason, C.H.D. Youmans, Millard Johnson and H.D. Griffin. Honorary pallbearers were Lem Knowlton, L.E. Sweat, J.B. Brown, W.C. Grady, M.C. Carter, S.A. Griffis and Dr. G.T. Hendry. Darling Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
