A descendant of pioneer families, the Rev. Isham Peacock, a revolutionary soldier and Benjamin and Sarah Riggins James, who the Ben James Primitive Baptist Church was named for, the Pierce County native had lived most of her life in Brantley County and was a housewife and former beautician. A daughter of the late David S. Lewis and Pearl Peacock Lewis, she was the widow of the late Willie Virgil Strickland who preceded her in death in 1975. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Irene Davis. A member of Eastern Star, Chapter No. 365, she was a charter member of the Southside Baptist Church, being the last of the original five charter members who had more than 80 years of membership at the church. A member and teacher of the Adult Sunday School Class, she had been active in many areas of the church. She was the first licensed beautician in Brantley County, having been licensed in 1936. She was also a former sales representative for the Avon Company for more than 25 years. Survivors include one daughter, Virleen Strickland of Nahunta; and a sister, Eva Schutts of Nazareth, PA. She is also survived by a number of other relatives. Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Southside Baptist Church in Nahunta. Officiating will be the Rev. Michael Gibbs and the Rev. J.D. Bowen. Burial will be in the Greenlawn Cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home and will be placed in the church two hours prior to the service. Visitation at the funeral home will be held from 6 until 8 tonight. Contributions may be made to the Hospice of Golden Isles, Inc., 1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, GA 31525.
