Although Mr. Youmans had been in ill health for some time, his death came as a shock to his many friends and associates throughout the area. A well-known educator, Youmans had served in the field of education for 43 years. He had served as county school superintendent for over 36 years. He was elected to this office in December, 1925, and served until December 1944. Then, in January, 1957, he was again elected and had been serving in this capacity up until his death. During the time that he was not serving as county superintendent, he taught school, for over 16 years, in Pierce, Brantley, Appling, Coffee and Jeff Davis counties. A native of Pierce County, Youmans was the son of the late Lawrence Hampton Youmans and Lavinia James Youmans. He received his secondary education in Patterson schools, was a graduate of Georgia College and Business Institute at Douglas. He also studied at Georgia Southern College, Statesboro and the University of Georgia, Athens. A former cashier of the Patterson Bank, Youmans had served as a member of its board of directors and was serving as vice-president. He was a member and deacon of Patterson Baptist Church, a member of Patterson Masonic Lodge No. 533, a member of local, state and national educational associations, and the Superintendents of Schools Assn. Youmans also had farming interests west of Patterson. He is survived by his wife, the former Adeline Winn of Patterson; one son, Dr. Bronze Clifford Youmans of Patterson, a veternarian with offices in Waycross; one brother, Stephen C. Youmans of Waycross; and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 3:00 o’clock from Patterson Baptist Church with Rev. Jesse Alligood, Rev. H.L. Dixon, and Rev. Clyde Thomas officiating. Active pallbearers were R.E. Flanders, A.J. Harrison, Oswell Smith, Cecil F. Hawley, Ralph Parrish, W.A. Holland, Mack Murray and Nesbert Thomas. Honorary pallbearers were Ed Hyers, D.B. Poppell, T.N. Harrison, R.T. Riggins, J.D. Aspinwall, E.L. Walker, D.J. Harrison, J.J. Griner, L.E. Griner, J.R. Byrd, A.M. Aspinwall, R.C. James, R.L. Stanfield, J.P. Barnard, Sr., Harry H. Henderson, Ernest Williams, Roy Westberry, W.T. DeLoach, J.H. Pittman, A.M. Ratliff, John B. Thornton, Harry Peacock, R.A. Youmans, J.C. Raulerson, W.C.
