Cooper WYATT BENTLEY CHILDS, D.D.S., F.A.C.D. Dr. Wyatt Bentley Childs was born May 16, 1895, Yatesville, Upson County, Georgia, son of Elder William Wyatt and Melvina Roberts Childs. Dr. Childs' father was a prominent Primitive Baptist minister, who served in the ministry of the Gospel for fifty-five years in middle Georgia. Wyatt Bentley Childs was graduated in 1912 from Joseph E. Johnston Institute in Upson County, after which he immediately matriculated at the old Southern Dental College in Atlanta; and from which he received the degree of Doctor of Dental Science, three years later (1915). He was a member of the Psi Omega dental fraternity. He engaged in general practice at Barnesville, Georgia, from 1915 to 1919. He then attended the Dewey Post Graduate School of Orthodontia in New York City, where he received his certificate. Returning to Georgia, he located in Atlanta and practiced orthodontics exclusively for eighteen months, then moved to Macon where he has since enjoyed a most busy and extensive practice specializing in orthodontics. Frequently lectured and conducted clinics, and has contributed numerous papers to the literature. Is Past President of the old Sixth District Dental Society: now the Central District; Past President Alumni Association Dewey School of Orthodontia 1927; Past President of the Georgia Dental Association 1929-30; Member of American Dental Association. Past President of the Southern Society of Orthodontists 1929; Member of American Society of Orthodontists; Diplomate of American Board of Orthodontics November 7, 1933. He was a member of the First International Orthodontic Congress held in New York City, in 1926, and was one of the honorary vice presidents of the Second International Congress held in London in 1931. Elected to Fellowship in American College of Dentistry, July 16, 1939. The Georgia Dental Association bestowed on him the title of Honorable Fellow May 20, 1941. He is a Fellow in the Academy International of Dentistry. Is a member of the Ambulatory Fracture Association for the study of skeletal pinning and external fixation, was member of the staff of Mercy Hospital, Macon, until it was closed in 1950, member of Macon Hospital staff for twenty-five years where he has specialized in the reduction and fixation of maxillo-facial injuries, and the external pinning of facial fractures. He was elected honorary member of the old Twelfth District Dental Society"before it was combined with the Central District Society of Georgia, is a life member of Georgia Dental Association and American Dental Association, and an honorary member of the Western District Dental Society. He is a member of the Masonic Order, Shrine, and by religious faith, a Baptist. He has long been interested in the study of archaeology, physical anthropology, and physical anthropology He collaborated with Smithsonian scientists, in the excavation, study, measurement, and evaluation of skulls, crania and other skeletal material during excavations at old Ocmulgee Fields near Macon, and other Indian mounds sites in Georgia. For many years he has been extremely interested in he study and prevention of occupational strain, postural defects, deformities, and other physical handicaps and disturbances brought on by dental practice. He invented and developed the Childs Posture Comfort Chair which he designed exclusively for dentist's use while operating at the chair. The chair supplies functional three dimensional support to the dentist's body when operating in the seated position; its purpose being to greatly eliminate the occupational hazards experienced y the practicing dentist. Outside his professional and civic activities, he has long been engaged in the improvement and breeding of pedigreed Hereford cattle. He is developing improved herds on his farm, in the Counties of Lamar and Monroe. He was. a member of the Board of Directors of the Georgia Hereford Association for several years. His brother, the late Dr. W.J. Childs, was associated with W.B. Childs for four years before engaging in the exclusive practice of orthodontia at Columbus, Georgia, where he enjoyed a large practice until his death in 1946.
