The resignation does not speak of the fact that he received shrapnel wounds in the back and leg which would leave him a virtual cripple in later life. His wife also died during this time, leaving his 3 small children without a mother. This War also cost him two brothers - Henry J. Ballard who was killed at Cold Harbor, and Miles Lafayette Ballard, who was killed at Ellison's Mill. Letter of Resignation: Comp 44th Ga Vols. near Stephenson Depot Va. Sept 8th 1864 Genl. B. Cooper ATJ Genl. Genl. I have the honor to tender this my resignation as 1st Lt. Co. "H" 44th Ga Vol, for the following reason. I. I have not been able to discharge the duties of an officer during the last eight months on account of a disease of my heart. II. I physically unable to do duty in the service any longer.
