Bob Elliott Runs Amuck And Shoots At Mr. W.D. Garrett

Bob Elliott, who has been living in Zebulon for the past three years and who 
moved here from Concord, ran amuck last Friday and fired one shot with an army 
rifle at his father-in-law, Mr. W.D. Garrett.

Mr. Garrett was on [the] east side of courthouse square, coming towards town 
when Elliott ran out of McGee’s market and restaurant where he was employed 
and advanced toward Garrett firing his army rifle one time, that gun that 
shoots a ball about seven inches long, you know.

There were several parties on the street some of whom were near Elliott. 
Sheriff Harrison, Marshall Sullivan and Mr. P.C. Shivers who happened to be in 
the latter’s store when he shot, ran out and stopped him just as he was 
reloading to shoot again.

Mr. Garrett was some thirty yards away at the time and was not hit by the ball.

It is said Elliott had been drinking for several days and had expressed his 
intention along this line.

Mr. Garrett took out a warrant for him for assault with intent to murder. 
Elliott was immediately placed in jail and his bond on waiving a preliminary 
hearing before Justice J.T. Baker was fixed at $800 to await his trial in 
Superior court.

If you haven’t seen one of those army guns, they look just slightly frightful.

On 1910 Pike County Census, Lula and her daughter are living with her parents 
and her husband is listed as a prisoner the county jail.
