Coggin is Killed and His Brother Badly Wounded The citizenship of Hollonville and community was shocked Saturday evening over a fatal cutting affair. A young man by the name of F.W. Quick is charged with having done the cutting. He is about 24 years old and has been in the employ of Mr. D.M. Coggin for some time past as a farm hand. On Saturday evening George and his brother W.O. Coggin, were riding together in a buggy, and, on passing the house of Mr. D.M. Coggin, stopped and called him out to them. When he came out, George asked him something about why he had him (George) subpoenaed as a witness. From this some very warm words ensued, and we learn that George and D.M. Coggin were pulling off their coats when young Quick who had watched the proceedings from the front veranda, and knew nothing of the trouble, ran out with a large pocket knife and thrust it in George's breast, cutting one of his ribs in twain, and penetrating his heart. The blade of the knife is three inches in length and, of course, produced instant death. W.O. Coggin in endeavoring to help his brother received an ugly and very painful wound on the neck. The wound was inflicted on the muscle which protects the jugular vein, and it will be seen that he also made a very narrow escape from tragic death. Quick was arrested and brought here last Sunday where he is now in jail. His case will probably be tried at this term of court. It is reported that he is getting in shape to work the insanity dodge. The Coggin family of this county is a large one and stands well in the estimation of the public. The following is the verdict of the coroner's jury which held an inquest on last Sunday: "We the jury having been panelled {sp} and sworn to inquire into and find the cause of the death of G.L. Coggin, now lying dead before us, and after having all the evidence before us possible, find that the deceased came to his death by a wound in the chest inflicted by F.W. Quick, and in our opinion is murder." (Transcribed 10/20/02 Lynn Cunningham) Note: D.M. Coggin is Doctor M. Coggin (He was not a doctor, this was his given name) G.L.
