Head was returning from W.F. Huddleston’s where he took supper on his way home about 10 o’clock when he was shot five times by Chapman. Chapman went home and committed suicide by cutting his throat from ear to ear. Neither body was discovered until Thursday morning, though both had been dead for several hours. It is said that bad feeling had existing [sic] between the two for some time and that Chapman had threatened the life of Head. Mr Head was a widower with one son. Mr. Chapman was also a widower but had no children. The killing and suicide are very much regretted by the entire community. (Transcribed by Lynn Ballard Cunningham 9/6/02)
