Within the past four years he has partially lost his hearing. (Transcribed 10/16/02 Lynn Cunningham) Note: James Buckelew lost his hearing during the Civil War. From an affidavit submitted by Robert W. Ballard for James Buckelew who was applying for a pension as a former Confederate soldier: Personally came before me, R.W. Ballard of the County of Carroll, State of Georgia, who being duly sworn, says that on the 10th day of May 1864, he was commanding Co. H. 44th Regiment Ga. Volunteers and was in 8 or 10 feet of J.L. Buckelew, when he rec'd the injury which caused his deafness. Ever since said Buckelew has lived in Carroll, he could not understand anything, however loud, without the use of an 'Ear Trumpet.'
