Wood, of Williamson, remains in the Strickland Memorial Hospital, Griffin, improved but in a somewhat serious condition as the result of an argument with Mr. Bryant Bottoms, of near Williamson, climaxing what is said to be a four-year-old feud. It is stated that Mr. Bottoms and Mr. Wood met Sunday morning a few minutes before nine o’clock and their differences were renewed which resulted in the shooting of Mr. Wood twice, once through the abdomen, the bullet puncturing the large intestine and the bladder, passing completely through his body. The second bullet making a flesh wound in the right side. Mr. Wood was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance where an x-ray revealed the extent of his injuries. An emergency operation was performed and Mr. Wood is reported to be doing nicely. Mr. Bottoms made no effort to escape, but calmly awaited the arrival of Sheriff Shackleford who was notified and reached Williamson within eight minutes after being notified of the shooting. Bottoms was placed in jail at Zebulon where he is being held on a blanket charge awaiting the outcome of the affair. Mr. Bottoms has retained Mr. C.A. Byars as his attorney who has advised him to issue no statement regarding the affair but who, himself has made the statement that “my investigation of the case thus far shows that the shooting was justifiable.” Witnesses state that Mr. Wood and Mr. Bottoms met near the store of Mr. Cade Scott, I Williamson, and that after a few apparently heated words Mr. Bottoms whipped out his pistol and fired three times in rapid succession, one bullet gong wild. After this, Mr. Wood has alleged to walk up to Mr. Bottoms and knocked him down, striking him with his closed fist. Another version reaching The Journal is that Mr. Wood first slapped Mr. Bottoms with his open hand and after having been struck and while staggering and off balance Mr. Bottoms then drew his pistol and fired, the first bullet going wild, the second striking Mr. Wood in the right side and the third entered his abdomen. Additional Comments: John Bradley Wood was a son of Josiah Hick Wood and Pocahontas T. Phillips. His father was born in Pike County, but moved to Texas circa 1870. In 1889 he moved his family back to Pike County. He was married to Bessie L. Dickinson, daughter of Clark Alexander Dickinson and Collie Jackson.
