Griffin, Georgia, Sunday Morning, July 19, 1889 Going To See Mother Judge Speer Allows a Defendant to Visit His Dying Parent. The case of the United States against John J. Ennis charged with working in an illicit distillery in Pike County came before Commissioner Erwin in Macon on Monday morning; he was bound over to the circuit court. He was brought before Judge Speer after the preliminary examination was held and pleaded guilty to the charge. He informed the court that his mother was quite ill at her home in Pike county and not expected to live. The judge directed that he be allowed to give bond in the sum of $100 for his appearance at the October term and gave the prisoner permission to go home to his mother.
