Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia Mr. J.A. Pitts Is Shot By His Son For Thief Last Sunday night, Mr. J.A. Pitts, a prominent farmer of near Williamson was shot by his son, Mr. Robert Pitts. Mr. Pitts had been off during the day and had just returned when the yard dog began to bark, which awoke young Pitts, who thinking something was wrong stepped out on a veranda with his pistol in his hand. Young Pitts saw a man approaching and he called a halt. The father did not hear him and continued toward young Pitts to enter the house and when within about twenty feet, young Pitts fired. Mr. Pitts fell to the ground exclaiming, “You have shot me - don’t shoot again.” Young Pitts instantly recognized his father’s voice and he immediately went out and assisted his father in the house and Dr. Beauchamp was summoned. When the doctor reached the bedside, he found Mr. Pitts had been shot through the right lung, the ball passed through the his right breast and lodging near the surface of the back, below the shoulder blade and was removed. The wound is a serious one and may prove fatal. Later article (Sept. 24, 1897) Mr. J.A. Pitts of Rover, who was accidently shot by his son several weeks ago, thinking that he was a burglar, is rapidly recovering. His many friends are hopeful that he will soon be out among them.
