Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia Mr. Abe Ballard, an industrious farmer and his little six year old son, Miller, were seriously injured by a freight train Tuesday. They had been to Zebulon to do some trading and were returning home. They were in a one-horse wagon and as they were crossing the railroad track near Elkins creek, the wagon was struck by a freight train and torn to pieces. Mr. Ballard was knocked several feet and fell on his head and shoulders. His son was found on the pilot of the engine. They were placed in the cab and carried to Zebulon. From the depot they were carried to the home of Mr. M.G. Harrison, a brother-in-law to Mr. Ballard. Dr. Graves, Aycock and Head were called in and their wounds were dressed. It was found that Mr. Ballard’s condition was critical. His skull and right shoulder had been crushed and he was in an unconscious condition. The little boy’s skull has been fractured and the skin peeled from his face. Up to the time of going to press the condition of Mr. Ballard is unchanged. The little boy, while seriously hurt, seems to be doing as nicely as could be expected. (Transcribed 09/20/03 Lynn Cunningham) Additional Comments: Abraham S.
