Miss Susie Beckham
Mrs. Lou Banks

Two of Zebulon’s most loveable elder ladies are Miss Susie Beckham and her 
sister Mrs. Lou Banks, with whom she makes her home. Mrs. Banks is 83 years of 
age but as spry as a woman of many, many years younger. She does all her house 
work, cooking, sewing, etc.

Miss Beckham was born August 26, 1837 in Monroe county but Mrs. Banks was born 
near Zebulon, their parents having moved to Zebulon when Miss Beckham was 
quite small. Their father was Jackson Beckham and their mother was Amelia 
Henderson of Elbert county before her marriage. Their grandfather was Jimmie 
Beckham. They had one brother - James Beckham, who lost his life in Virginia 
in 1863 while serving under Lee. Their sisters were Mary, Eliza, Sallie, Alice 
and Amelia. During the war all those sisters wove and spun for the Confederate 
soldiers. Mary and Sallie married men by the name of Medlock and moved to 
Arkansas. Amelia died when a child. Alice married a man by the name of King, 
of Tampa Fla. Eliza was never married; she died in Zebulon in 1924. Miss Susie 
has been with Mrs. Banks since 1923. On February 12, 1927, she fell and has 
been confined to her bed. She has received the kindest care and attention from 
Mrs. Banks and other relatives. She is cheerful and always looks on the bright 
side of life.

They went to school at and near Zebulon to Miss Jane Davidson, and Prof. 
Stewart and daughter. Mrs. S,G, Pope and sisters and Mrs. Dodie Gwyn, Mrs. 
Mattie Green, Mrs Sallie Howell were among their school-mates.

Their mother died in 1857 and their father married again in 1860 to a Mrs. 
Shepard, who before her first marriage was a Parham of Monroe county. There 
were two children by this marriage, one died young and the other was Mrs. 
Bessie Gray Holmes who died in Barnesville.

Mrs. Banks was married to Mr. Burwell Banks on April 28, 1867 at Zebulon by 
Rev. R.A. Seals, pastor of the Zebulon Methodist church. They reared six 
children: -James of Eufaula, Ala.; Joe, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; Cadesman, of 
Zebulon; Raphel, who died many years ago; Mrs. Sallie McCoy, who died in 
Zebulon in July 1922; Mrs. Mary Weaver, of Ackerman, Miss.

Mr. and Mrs. Banks first lived with Mr. Banks’ parents at their home which 
stood where the Baptist church now stands, afterwards they moved into a small 
house where Mrs. Banks now lives, this house being added to and made a two 
story building.

Mr. Banks died Nov. 20, 1920, after being confined to his room for many years. 
Miss Susie and Mrs. Banks are loyal members of the Methodist church and always 
respond cheerfully to the Lord’s work. 

Miss Susie and Mrs. Banks are two lovable Christian characters whose 
characteristics are patience, goodness, zeal, courage, fidelity, tenderness 
and love, and gives yo us characters worthy of example.
