Dr. J.C. Beauchamp, W.D. Dingler, Matt Anderson, R.H. Yarbrough, S.W. Williamson and Dr. David Yarbrough died years ago. H.G. Farrar passed away last year. The passing of Judge Hartley of Zebulon last week left “Papa” Drewry as one of the few remaining of the “Old Guard” in the county. One of the grandest characters in this section of the state, he lives quietly with his daughter, Mrs. Belle Dickinson. Up to seven years ago he was the oldest carrier of the Atlanta Journal on record. Known throughout the county as “papa” Drewry, he met the train regularly each night, walking by the light of a lantern to get his papers for delivery. Ernest Rogers broadcast birthday greetings over WSB Sunday morning. Mr. Drewry moved to Pike with W.D. Dingler in 1878. On December 2, 1869, he married Miss Rebecca Holsey, and has three children. They are Mrs. Belle Dickinson, and T.E. Drewry of Williamson, and W.E. Drewry of Atlanta. He has seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His wife died in 1925. He has served as Elder in the Christian church for 35 years and is still actively in place every Sunday. “Papa” Drewry attends all the old soldier reunions which he considers one of the greatest joys of his life. He entered the War between the States when he was less than sixteen years of age in 1864, and served until he was honorably discharged.
