Johnson in which it was stated that he was the oldest man in the county. We have now found an older man in the person of Rev. J.W. Marshall who lives near Taylor’s Warm Springs. Rev. Marshall was 88 years old on June 16, 1927, being born near Bluff Springs campground on June 16, 1839. He has lived in Pike county all his life except three years in Spalding county. Mr. Marshall saw four years service as a confederate soldier in Virginia and Tennessee and other states, being a member of Company H, 53rd Ga. Regiment, which went out under the command of Col. L.T. Doyle [sic] of Griffin. He was captured a short time before the close of the war and carried to Camp Douglas, Chicago, Ill., where he was released on his 26th birthday, June 16, 1865. Rev. Marshall was ordained a Baptist minister in 1886, the year of the Charleston earthquake, but he says he is not an earthquake preacher. It is quite interesting to talk with Mr. Marshall as he is able to tell the younger generation many things they do not know. He has an excellent memory and is in good physical condition. We trust he may see many more birthdays. (Transcribed 17 Oct 2009 - Lynn Cunningham) Additional Comments: John William Marshall, b. 16 June 1839, d. 13 Nov 1932; son of Pendleton Jones Marshall and Nancy Glenn Barrett. John William Marshall was married to Sarah E. Osburn on 7 Sept 1857 in Pike County.
