He invested liberally in all sorts of ware, including a large quantity of “John Barleycorn.” About 6 o’clock he was ready to get into his wagon and drive home, but his liquor had the best of him, and after going a few blocks, being unable to drive, he landed his wagon against an electric light post. A negro came to his assistance and offered to drive him home. His services were accepted and the journey was made for about seven miles in safety. Carden says that in his drunken stupor he fell asleep and did not wake until 1 o’clock this morning, when he found his face and shoulders covered with blood and an ugly gash in his head. An investigation revealed that the negro was missing and with him had gone all of the groceries and dry goods with which Carden’s wagon was loaded, $55 in money and a fine watch and chain. The police did not take long to locate the negro, who was arrested and lodged in jail. No money or anything was found upon his person that would convict him, but he has made three different statements of his whereabouts last night and all of them have been proven false. His name is Oscar Sims and he is known as a desperate and daring fellow. Officers are now at his home making a search of his house and surroundings. Additional Comments: This is William M. Carden, born 26 March 1848 in Pike County and died 07 October 1910 in Pike County.
