Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, Jan. 10, 1896 He's a Dollyvarden! Delk Is Into It Again, For Highway Robbery. Last Saturday night Bob and Henry Connally, two very old bachelor brothers who lived together, near Warnerville, Meriwether county, were assaulted and beaten up badly by two men who, no doubt, intended to rob the old men of some money they were supposed to have. The men were thwarted in their purpose by Mr. Clark Sullivan, who chanced to be passing the home and heard the old men crying for aid. The would-be robbers escaped. A few days after, on strong suspicion, Taylor Delk, a notorious character who makes his headquarters at Concord and operates throughout the adjacent country, was arrested and given a committal trial. He was placed under a $500 bond, which he was unable to make there and asked to be carried to Senoia, where he said he had friends. The officers in charge started with him to that place, but on the way Delk picked his chance and made good his escape. The officers are eager to recapture him, as he is a bad character. One of the old men is badly hurt and there is but little hope of his recovery. The people are very much incensed at such an outrage. Sometime ago, Delk was accused of robbing an old man by the name of Harris in this county. Later on he was arrested in Griffin for cow stealing. He is from Atlanta, and could not live there on account of pesky police who are always putting their noses in other people's business. (Transcribed 11/15/02 Lynn Cunningham) The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, Jan. 24, 1896 Delk Is In Limbo He Was Re-Captured Last Saturday He Is Held For Murder He is Charged With the Murder of an Old Man In Meriwether Three weeks ago an account of an attempt at highway robbery and the subsequent arrest and escape of the notorious Taylor Delk appeared in these columns. About one month ago two parties broke into the house of Messrs. Cicero and Ab Connally, two old bachelors living just across the line of Pike in Meriwether county. The two old gentleman were severely beaten and since then one of them has died from the effect of the wounds received. It was supposed that the parties were seeking money that the Connallys were said to have hoarded, but none was found. Taylor Delk and a young man of bad reputation by the name of Langford, were suspected, and Taylor [Delk] was arrested, charged with murder. Delk was accompanied by the bailiff to the house of a friend, where Delk proposed to give bond. While on this trip Delk made a dash for liberty and made good his escape. Since that time he has been lurking around his old haunts and has eluded every attempt to arrest him. Saturday morning, a bailiff from Coweta county, heard that Delk was in the neighborhood of Senoia. He hastened to Senoia for help. Accompanied by marshall Reeves, [they] set out on the hunt. A few miles from Senoia the officers espied Delk in the road ahead of them and discovered at once he carried a shotgun. They drove on leisurely and finally overtook him before he discovered their identity. The officers covered him with their pistols before he could offer resistance. He went to Senoia without trouble, but when the officers prepared to handcuff him before starting for Meriwether county they had no easy job. Delk swore vengeance. He was lodged in the Meriwether county jail, where he now awaits trial on the charge of murder. Langford, his accomplice, has not been found by the officers. Some novelist ought to form Delk's acquaintance. He would score a big hit as the arch villain in a detective story. (Transcribed 11/17/02 Lynn Cunningham) The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, Feb. 6, 1896 The Journal learns that Taylor Delk who was placed in jail at Greenville a few weeks ago on the charge of highway robbery has given bond. It is learned also that he has sworn eternal vengeance against some parties in this county whom he charges with having offended his dignity. (Transcribed 11/17/02 Lynn Cunningham)
