Brooks was a prominent Pike citizen. Other than being his friend, I do not know why Mr. Brooks wrote this for the Pike County Journal. Nonetheless, it is an interesting article - a cautionary tale reminiscent of today’s problems. The Pike County Journal Zebulon, Ga., Tuesday, September 23, 1890 Obituary Claude Groover Kenney died by his own hands in the city of Atlanta, Ga., Monday September 15, 1890. Although a suicide death he deserves some notice from the pen of a friend. This duty is placed on the writer of these lines. It is too often the case for the public mind to censure the man who would take his own life, rather than pay to them the tribute due to their memory. Public opinion construes that a suicidal act must be committed by weapons or poisons taken internally. While many thousands of morphine eaters who come to their death from its use, have eulogies passed upon their lives. Honored by both preachers and people. Yet in the eyes of God are guilty of suicide. Many others come to their death from recklessness and imprudence, who are exonerated from the crime of suicide. Such is the judgement of man, but not of God. Mr. Kenny was a Kentuckian by birth reared by highly respectable parents. His Mother with the youngest members of the family reside in Georgetown, Ky. We learn that she is a noble matron. What a shock to her is the death of her son. May she sorrow to him who will soothe and comfort her in this her our of trouble. Mr. Kenney in the very vigor of manhood has left to mourn his death a dear wife and one child, a tiny little boy bright and intelligent. She has a father, mother, brothers, sisters and friends to share with her the deep sorrow which has come so unexpectedly. May the good Lord comfort his bereaved ones. As a man, he was honorable, high toned an generous in his nature. A true friend to those who confided in him. He was the worst enemy he had. But he is no more. We have consigned his body to the grave and committed his spirit to God who gave it. “What we know not now, we shall know hereafter. Peace to his ashes. Sept 18, 1890 W.A.
