Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, Jan. 24, 1896 A Good Man Dies In the death of Rev. Andrew Peden, which occurred in his home in the western part of the county last Sunday, the county of Pike loses one of her grandest citizens. Mr. Peden had been in ill health for some time and the fire which burned a servant's house in his yard a few weeks ago caused him to suffer prostration from which he was unable to rally. He was 85 years of age and served faithfully and efficiently in the Christian ministry for fifty years. His good deeds and his wonderful example will live long in this section - a benediction to our people. Also: Reverend A.G. Peden The honored and revered old gentleman breathed his last breath at 2 o'clock Sunday morning the 18 inst. Such a character is seldom found; so noble, so good, so grand, all combined with the highest intellect. To converse with the Rev. Mr. Peden, on any subject was knowledge. His mind was bright and clear, even when he had to be assisted to his old arm chair at the fire side. Such a worthy, useful man laid in his grave, it is so sad. His faithful, devoted wife will miss him sorrowfully, she has nursed him so long and was ever ready to administer to his wants. We know he has won the rest for which he labored, he was so devoted to his church, loved all denominations, but the Presbyterian was his choice. He stood among them as a counselor. Only a short while before his death, on his eighty-fifth birthday he asked his wife to send for his neighbor that he wanted to have prayer. She told him that it was night and that is was very late, then he said "hold me up on my knees." She did so and there on his feeble bended knees, offered his heart-felt petitions to the Great I Am, whom he loved and obeyed, and in whose presence he will rejoice evermore. Such a gentle, loving heart! During my last call, he remarked, "I am so sorry you are going away, come to my burial." Farewell, good man, your kindness as a neighbor will never be forgotten. Tears and love for the widow, love and tears for the fatherless children and grand children. Neighbors, friends, community and county, Mr. Peden's loss is felt among you all. Remember his admonition. - Narcissa (Transcribed 11/17/02 Lynn Cunningham) Note: At Friendship Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Pike County, Georgia: Rev. Andrew G.
